Happy Holidays, Vancouver! This time of year is looked forward to for many reasons, including the variety of candy and confections—like chocolate. And although chocolate is typically thought of as a sugary treat to only be consumed in scarcity, we disagree with that notion!
In case you haven’t already heard, chocolate should no longer be considered an unhealthy junk food that causes acne, obesity and high cholesterol. With the latest research and studies, dark chocolate (the cocoa) is proving to be a nutritious superfood offering many positive health benefits!
(Dark chocolate is dairy-free, of course.)
Here’s the low down: chocolate can be considered a healthy snack when it’s made with at least 70% cocoa and you limit your consumption to no more than 7 ounces a week. Once you add milk, butter and sugar to cocoa, the health benefits substantially decline.
The next time you’re pondering over the many choices of chocolate bars in the check-out line at your grocery store, skip the basic brands and look for a label that offers the rich goodness of cocoa without the extras!
Here are some reasons why cocoa is good for you:
Good for Your Heart
There are a number of great reasons to bring a box of good quality chocolate to someone with a broken heart. (Did you realize that chocolate is actually good for a broken heart?) According to various studies, cocoa products, which are rich sources of flavonoids, have been shown to reduce blood pressure and the risk of cardiovascular disease. (1)
One study also showed that cocoa and dark chocolate contained more antioxidant activity, polyphenols and flavanols than other fruits they tested, which included blueberries and acai berries. (2)
Good for Your Brain
Studies are also suggesting that due to improved blood flow to certain areas of the brain, cocoa prevents cognitive decline, especially in elderly people with mental impairment. Go ahead and have that cup of hot chocolate or two if it’s cold out—not just to keep you warm, but for the goodness of your brain! (3)
Good for Your Mood
When times get tough, we tend to make ourselves feel better by pulling on our sweat pants and kicking back on the couch with an assortment of junk food and an appropriately emotional movie. May we recommend you go ahead and fill up on dark chocolate and a tub of vice cream for such occasions?
Scientists have found that cocoa has shown antidepressant-like effects on certain physiological processes. Also, the flavonols and presence of neurochemical phenylethylamine promotes the feeling of contentment to enhance your mood.
So if you’re stressed or depressed, have some dark chocolate! (4)
It’s no coincidence that you will find that at least half a dozen of our awesome flavours of vice cream are made with the goodness of dark chocolate in some variation or another! Chocolate is a crowd pleaser; always has been, and always will be.
So come on in to Nice Vice to try our popular Dark Chocolate Mint and see what we’re talking about—you won’t regret it. We’re located at 1022 Mainland Street, in the heart of Yaletown.
